The Fifth Ape

Our first meeting of semester two will be a screening of Richard Dawkins’ documentary The Fifth Ape. It will be held where we always have our meetings in DB23-004 at 7 pm next Tuesday 2 nd of August. As always tea, coffee and cookies will be provided.

We will also be announcing our next AGM at this meeting so now is the time to start considering if you would like to run for a position and nominate yourself by addressing the clubs email jcusoap@gmail.com

O week and beyond

We will be holding a stall for the club during orientation on Tuesday the 15th of February, and possibly on the 16th as well if places are available. We are seeking volunteers to man the stall any time between 9am and 3pm. Anyone interested in lending a hand should contact jcusoap@gmail.com with times you are available.

The first meeting of the  year will take place on February 22nd at 7pm in DB23-004 (see the map under the “About” section of this website). The first meeting is a good time to meet fellow members and get a feel for what the club is all about. Also, bring a copy of your timetables so we can arrange the best day for the group to meet for coffee at Bambinis on campus.

Looking forward to meeting and catching up with you all.

SoAP now on twitter!

As more people are starting to discover the usefulness of twitter, we’ve decided to get on board too. You can now follow us @SoAP_JCU to receive short timely messages about meetings, relevant news, discussion, quotes and more! In addition, we’ve added a twitter widget to the website (look to your right) which displays our recent tweets and retweets, plus the addition of “share” buttons for twitter and facebook on our articles. Following us will most likely get you a return follow, and we plan to ask questions, get answers and post them either here, or in the newsletter. This year we’d like to get even more people involved in SoAP, and this is just another step towards that goal.

GOOD WITHOUT GOD!

The Australian Book of Atheism

The Australian Book of Atheism, edited by Warren Bonett, is an exciting new book due for release in November. The book contains a series of short essays from writers such as Michael Bachelard, Dr Leslie Cannold, Robyn Williams, Lyn Allison, Tim Minchin, and Dr Philip Nitschke

The book answers questions such as, ‘Does prayer have a place in Parliament? Should ‘creation science’ be taught in Australian schools? Is atheism maligned in political debate? Will Australia’s future be godless?’

Scribe Publishing has generously offered all SoAP club members a 10% discount with a possible 30% discount if 20 orders are placed. The full retail price is $35. To indicate your interest please send an email to jcusoap@gmail.com indicating whether you are willing to purchase the book at 10% or only at the 30% discounted rate, along with your contact details. Your name will be added to an order list and you will be contacted to confirm your desire purchase the book before the order is placed.

The Greens come to chat

Dr Mike Rubenach is the Greens candidate for Herbet. He will be talking to us about religion and politics and also educating us about some of the finer details of Greens policies. As many of you are aware the Australian Christian Lobby has funded a spin campaign against the Greens labeling them anti-Christian. The election is this Saturday so don’t miss your chance to have your questions answered.

When: Thursday 19 August

Please note that our regular meeting on Tuesday night has been postponed to Thursday as Mike is unable to make it Tuesday. Other than that the time and place are still the same: DB23-004 at 7pm.
